This Week's Lesson: Samuel Listens & Obeys

Samuel showed His love for the Lord by listening to and obeying Him
1 Samuel 3

BIBLE VERSE:
“Come and listen to the words of the Lord.”  Joshua 3:9

Hi Preschool Parents,

What are ways you listen for God 's promptings? What confirms to you that He is speaking?  At times we aren't sure whether God is directing us to do something. Are we hearing correctly? In our lesson this week Samuel went through a similar process of learning to hear God's voice. It even took Eli three times to figure out the voice Samuel had heard might have been God speaking. But when Samuel stopped to be available to listen, God told him amazing things that changed his life as he obeyed what God had told him.

Ask God to help you be aware of the nudges of His Spirit. Take time this week to be alone with Him. Ask Him to speak through His word and prayer. And then ask Him to make you available and ready for the unexpected ways in which He will use you to teach your children to listen, love and obey Him.

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:" John 10:27

"Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not." Jeremiah 33:3

"And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.” 1 Samuel 3:10

See you all this Sunday for a word from our Lord!

Teaching Kids How to Hear God’s Voice

We can help our kids learn how to hear God's voice by showing them how to meditate on His Word.

When our kids were young, we would pray at bedtime. We told the kids prayer was our time to talk to God and listen to Him. Our son would said, “But, Mommy, I can’t hear God.” As parents, we can help our kids learn how to hear God’s voice by showing them how to meditate on His Word.

Learning How to Hear God’s Voice

Once your kids learn to read, use these steps to train them to hear God better:
  1. Read a devotional with Scripture or a bible verse you studied in a previous Sunday school lesson.
  2. Write a sentence (kids) on the following prompts:

Examine Your Heart

  • Reflect on whether you need to confess anything, even if it’s just a crabby attitude or an unkind thought.
  • Write down any prayer requests or current concerns you have.
  • Tell how God has demonstrated His love for you, big or small, or any “coincidences” that could be God working in your life.
  • Thank God for something He has provided, and write a sentence that praises Him.
  • Meditate on Scripture
  • Consider what stood out to you in the Bible passage you just read and underline it.
  • Write the lesson you learned or the main point of that reading. Where have you heard this message or idea before?
  • Describe what you feel are the actions God wants you to take based on His truth and that lesson. (I reminded my children that God wouldn’t ask them to do anything that went against His character, rules or biblical principles.) Then ask God to help you complete this action.

When children begin to use this exercise, they often began to see God moving in their daily lives through Scripture, circumstances, and convictions. This made God and His Word more relevant to them. Through these prompts, children will be able to learn how to hear God’s voice in their hearts and lives.
