Psalm 86, a song from David, is one of a man who is desperate to hear from the Lord in his time of need. David lays it all out at the very beginning by saying “Listen, Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy.” There is little doubt about what state David is in when he is writing this psalm.
One of the reasons I love the Psalms is that they are so applicable to life today. Even though they were written thousands of years ago, they speak so clearly and poignantly into what is happening today. Contrary to what some might believe, following Jesus does not necessarily correlate to a life that is worry or tragedy free. Life is hard. This world is broken. There is no getting around that. Jesus promised us a life that is filled with purpose and fulfillment, but He did not promise that life would be easy.
What I have experienced as I’ve grown to know the Lord better is that He is kind. He cares about people who love Him. God knows the state of this world better than anyone, and He can sympathize with us in our hardships. To me, that is comforting. I can walk through times of life that will be dark and will be a test, but I can know that Jesus cares for me and that I’m not alone. Psalm 86:5 sums up this idea so well…
For You, Lord, are kind and ready to forgive, rich in faithful love to all who call on You.
By following Jesus, we can experience the fulfillment He promises, and also the kindness and care that He also provides when life is hard.
